Anhui University was founded in 1928 in Anqing, then the provincial capital, pioneering modern higher education in Anhui. In 1956, the university relocated to Hefei, the provincial capital of Anhui and a renowned historical and cultural city celebrated as “the foremost city of the Jianghuai region, a strategic hub of Wu and Chu, the ancient land of the Three Kingdoms, and the hometown of Bao Zheng.” On September 16, 1958, Chairman Mao Zedong personally inscribed the university's nameplate “Anhui University,” with this date designated as the university's founding anniversary. The institution was selected for the national “Project 211” in 1996, became a university jointly supported by the Ministry of Education and the Anhui Provincial People's Government in 2013, and has been included in the national “Double First-Class” initiative since 2017.
The university currently operates four campuses—Qingyuan, Longhe, Shihe Road, and Sizhou Road—along with one National University Science Park. The total campus area spans 2,831 mu (approximately 188 hectares), with a total floor space of about 1.2 million square meters. The university leases the Jinzhai Road Campus of Anhui Foreign Economic Vocational College as a transitional campus and is accelerating the construction of the Ziyun Campus, covering approximately 1,100 mu (about 73 hectares). Boasting beautiful surroundings and first-class facilities, the university has been honored with titles including the inaugural “NationalCivilized Campus” (one of 39 nationwide), “National Model Unit for Greening,” and “National Demonstration Unit for Resource-Conserving Public Institutions.”
